about

After KOTC disbanded in 2002, I took the rest of the summer to record a bunch of demos at my parent's farm for my new make believe band Fin Sullivan. Fortunately, after hearing the songs, Bi-Fi Records were still into the idea of releasing my pop music even without Keepers. Like our first album, Aaron Hefley was the man for the job to record this EP (which later became "The Pride of Zebulous" EP from Keepers of the Carpet, hilariously enough).
I was still pretty new to recording and Aaron had really opened my eyes and ears up to different possibilities with harmonies, recording techniques, etc during the making of our first album. I was studying music at Central College so I was pretty hungry to continue creating. I had also recently discovered a band named Ozma out of California. I saw them open for Weezer and quickly fell in love with their first album "Rock and Roll Part III." This song was my little "ode" to Ozma at the time. I'm still a huge fan, and they continue to wow me on each of their albums.

The drums for "The Pride of Zebulous" were all recorded with Aaron Hefley at the Bi-Fi Records studio out on the far west side of Lincoln Way in Ames above Cyclone Audio at the time. In fact, all of the released songs from that 4 song EP were all recorded with Aaron. But this song "Ode" was finished by Patrick Tape Flemming. KOTC drummer Jason Holland and I reunited and put together a new version of KOTC. On this recording of "Ode" it's Jason, Rano LoVan, and myself. For some reason it did not make the cut to "The Pride of Zebulous." There are a few others that didn't make the EP as well...we'll see if I'm brave enough to release those at some point as well, but for now enjoy "Ode (Self-Explanatory)."

lyrics

I fell in love with a girl. She was ordinary.
She fell in love with a boy. Self Explanatory.

She likes me, and I like her.
And that's too bad for him.

She made me feel like a man when I had to go and
do the things that I can. (And I can)
She likes me, and I like her.
And that's too bad for him.
